There are different ways hair can burn. It may be damaged chemically if you were trying to color or straighten it, or it could be burned from curling irons or other heating tools. In either case, after you’ve visited your stylist, the healing can begin with some hair therapy such as conditioning treatments and hair masks.
You can get these done professionally, as it’s the perfect excuse to visit the spa more often. Or, if you want to save money, you can do these at home on your own time. Try one or more of these trusted sources. Everyone is different, so find what works best for you!

Check the oil temperature first before application; you don’t want another burn to have to worry about! Once it has melted at a good temperature, massage it into your clean, wet hair. Wrap a hot towel around your head and let it work its magic for an hour. Then rinse and wash hair normally. You can do this 1-2 times a month to help regenerate and moisturize your hair.

You should know that vitamin E is an extremely important micronutrient of which many people are not getting enough. This antioxidant is responsible for healthy hair and skin. Foods that are rich in vitamin E include avocado, green leafy veggies (such as kale, spinach, chard), broccoli, Brussel sprouts, tomatoes, blackberries, grapes, free-range eggs, nuts and seeds (especially sunflower seeds and peanuts) and grains like wheat germ (Peterson, 2018).
It is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning that it needs to be eaten with some fat to be absorbed into the body. Along with your diet, you can take a vitamin E supplement that you can find at most health food stores, or even apply vitamin E oil directly to your scalp a few times a week before bed. This is the number one nutrient your skin needs,
Biotin (also known as vitamin H) is associated with healthy, strong hair and increased hair growth (Peterson, 2018). This water-soluble vitamin helps metabolize fats and proteins. Foods that are rich in biotin are protein-rich, often found in meats and raw egg whites. Some cereals are also fortified with this. This can also be found as a supplement at your local health food store.
Copper is another micronutrient extremely important for hair growth. Good news, chocolate lovers! Copper can be found in dark chocolate. If chocolate isn’t your thing, you can also find it in oysters, crab meat, cashew nuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, whole grain bread and pasta, broccoli, potatoes, and bananas (Peterson, 2018).
Oat Straw is an amazing herb that can help you grow your hair fast! You can enjoy this herb as a tea or infusion and reap the benefits for your body. Organic oat straw may be harder to find, but it is worth the splurge! You can also buy it as an extract and apply directly to your hair for softness, moisture, and growth.
I recommend both a nutritive approach as well as a treatment approach to fix burnt hair. Healthy hair starts from inside, out. Be patient, stick with your decisions, and soon your luscious locks will look better than ever. Dealing with damaged hair can be traumatic, be these results will be dramatic!
Can My Burnt Hair Grow Back?
Unfortunately, once hair has burned, it is damaged and will not come back (unlike your pesky ex)! But no worries, burnt hair is not the end of the world. Take a deep breath and prepare yourself for some damage control.
The first step I recommend is to visit your nearest (and most trusted) stylist. They will help you find a new and fabulous style to cover up the damage. Think of it as taking a bad situation and turning it into a new adventure!

Remember, new hair starts from the roots, and it will eventually grow over where the damage was done, and you will be able to forget all about the incident.

How Do I Avoid Burning My Hair?
Prevention is the best cure for anything, right? In order to prevent burning your hair, you need to be conscientious of what you are doing. In other words, pay attention!!!
We’ve all seen those funny videos of young girls trying to do beauty tutorials, and they end up burning their hair because they were too busy talking and not paying attention. It’s both horrifying and comical. It happens.
But seriously, pay attention to how long you’ve had the curling iron or straightener on there. Use the following tips to prevent long term damage:
#1 Use a curling iron with a thermometer on it. For finer hair, do not let it go above 320 degrees. For thicker hair, no more than 430 degrees.
#2 The lower the heat, the better for your hair! Even if it doesn’t burn your hair, an excess amount of heat can still cause damage to your hair. Use only the minimum amount necessary.
#3 Make sure hair isn’t wet from the shower and take the time to ensure it is totally detangled.
#4 Use a heat protectant such as CHI Silk Infusion or Art Naturals Thermal Hair Protector.
#5 If using a curling iron, do not use on the hair for more than 10 seconds! Remember, the less time exposed to heat, the better!
#6 Use a flat iron with a thermometer (or some sort of reader) on it. Do not use it above 300 degrees.
#7 The fewer passes you make with your iron, the more your hair will thank you in the long run!
#8 Do not hold the flat iron on your hard for more than 5 seconds.
#9 Chose quality brands of these hair care tools to receive the safest benefits for your hair. Redken is my favorite, and I cannot recommend it enough.
#10 If you are chemically treating your hair, read and follow the directions and read all warnings CAREFULLY to prevent burning yourself. Pay close attention to the times it gives and make sure to set the alarm on your phone, so you do not keep it on too long!
#11 Finally, if you are using a coloring/treatment product for the first time, always do a skin patch test first to ensure you won’t have a reaction to the product. Apply a bit of product to your skin in a place you can easily access, cover for 24 hours, and monitor. If a reaction occurs, wash with copious amounts of water or milk immediately and seek medical attention.
